RIYADH: Seven people died and 90 were rescued in Jazan on Thursday, the Civil Defense in the region announced Friday.

Maj. Yahya Al-Qahtani, spokesman for the Directorate of Civil Defense in Jazan, said 11 people who were trapped in the floods in a valley were either airlifted with the help of helicopters or rescued by divers who went to the site on life saving boats.

More than 100 Civil Defense officials were deployed to help the distressed people. The spokesman said a rescue team is still looking for two people reported missing following a heavy downpour. Around 50 families were evacuated from their homes as a whole neighborhood was flooded.

The spokesman also said that communications to the region were cut off and power was disrupted as a result of the rains.

In Khamis Mushayt, Civil Defense officials recovered the body of a boy who was drowned in rainwater.

Hailstorms, meanwhile, were reported in the Al-Ahsa region.

According to the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment, rain and thunderstorms will continue in places such as Jazan , Najran and Asir.
