RIYADH: The Saudi Food and Drug Authority has imposed a temporary ban on imports of poultry, eggs and associated products from Togo’s Maritime region because of the spread of a severe strain of the avian flu, according to a statement by the Saudi Press Agency-SPA.
SFDA said in a statement on its website that this action comes in response to the urgent notification issued by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), which indicated the emergence of a severe strain of the H5N1 avian flu) in the Maritime region.
SFDA excluded from this temporary ban poultry meat and egg products that have been thermally treated, or any other way that would eliminate the H5N1 virus, and on the condition that all the adopted requirements and health controls and standards are applied. This is in addition to the availability of health certificates issued by the appropriate authorities in the Republic of Togo that prove the products are thermally or otherwise treated so as to eliminate the avian flu virus.
SFDA said the ban will continue until the health status of livestock in the region is stable again.
