Shooting may replace beheading

A ministerial committee is looking into formally dropping beheading as a method of execution in the country, according to a local newspaper report. The Ministry of Interior has authorized regional governors to approve execution by a firing squad as an alternative.
A region’s governor is entitled to decide the method of execution following a death sentence by a criminal court, according to a Bureau of Investigation and Prosecution circular.
The circular was distributed to the Bureau of Investigation and Prosecution’s branches throughout the Kingdom’s regions.
Execution by a firing squad is not a breach of Shariah.
