JEDDAH: The water, agriculture and environment committee of the Shoura Council has suggested delaying the computation of water bills according to the new tariff plan until all issues are addressed.
Among its recommendations, the panel suggested field studies to know the actual consumption of water by citizens and amending the consumption categories.
A number of citizens have complained of being charged inflated water bills after the new tariff plan came into effect.
The committee also stressed the need to quickly apply the Saudi building rules with regard to water, and that the ministry and the National Water Company (NWC) acquire the necessary drilling permits from the relevant authorities before awarding water and sanitation projects.
The committee said that one of the duties of the Shoura Council is to work for the public and discuss the reasons for many complaints against the rising water bills after the new tariff rates came into effect.
The committee said it hosted the minister of water, environment and agriculture and the former CEO of NWC along with the undersecretary of planning and development to discuss the issue of water bills.
