JEDDAH: Five students of the Sri Lankan International School (SLIS), Jeddah, were honored for their outstanding performance at the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) AS Level and IGCSE, at the Baterjee Medical College auditorium recently.
Mohammed Nidhal Rizwan was given a gold medal for his achievement at the AS Level examinations, while Niwadh Nihar, Rahma Rifkie, Aanisha Imtiyas Jabir and Asma Mazmi received gold medals for scoring high in the IGCSE results.
“On behalf of the Sri Lankan government, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the school and the management for doing a wonderful job in the field of education,” said Sri Lankan Ambassador Azmi Thassim, who was the chief guest at the event.
“The embassy and the consulate are always ready to provide assistance and support for the betterment of the school and the education of the students.”
The envoy also called on the parents to support and co-operate with the school management in all the school affairs.
Mohamed Ilyas, board chairman, congratulated the students for their accomplishments and also commended the school staff for their efforts.
He expressed pride on the outstanding AS Level and IGCSE results, mentioning that a school student was among the recipients of the CIE award for best across 8 in IGCSE-western region of Saudi Arabia. Presenting the school’s annual report, Principal Basheer Risvi thanked the teachers and parents for their cooperation and mentioned the several advancements and upgrades the school underwent in the previous year.
The top achievers of the school were also given certificates and vouchers for subject prizes and general proficiency. The students who won the English Day competitions were also honored.
Other proceedings of the evening included the launching of the school’s annual magazine and the felicitation of staff members, board members and logistic committee members for their valuable services to the school.
Two winners from SLISJ of the Gavel Club Speech Contest were also honored for their performance at Saudi Arabia Toastmasters Annual Contests (SATAC) 2016.
Guest speaker, Lakshman Sockalingam, English professor at King Abdulaziz University, emphasized on the topic of confidence, and encouraged the students to have belief in their abilities and have self-confidence.
Ammar Ilyas, head prefect, delivered the vote of thanks, followed by the singing of the national anthem.
