The Ministry of Social Affairs has announced that disabled children under six will not be eligible to receive transportation for people with disabilities. It has also set conditions for those who wish to apply for the Gift of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques which grants the disabled special cars for easy mobility.

The conditions stipulate that the beneficiary should have total paralysis, be paraplegic and have had an amputation of his limb or of both legs. The applicant should also be a Saudi national aged over six years.

The ministry also demands that applicants come to its headquarters in person with a number of documents including the family register book or the national ID, proof of residence (property ownership, water or electricity bill) in addition to proof of monthly income, medical report, and a driver’s license that enables him to use the transportation for the disabled.

The ministry further announced that it had terminated a contract with a manufacturing company because it had delayed delivery and didn’t manufacture the required vehicles.

It stated that it had signed a contract with a new company to provide the special vehicles and manufacture cars with the required specifications.

The ministry pointed out that 1,000 vehicles from a total of 12000 from the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Gift to the disabled had been customized for various disabilities.

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Gift to provide the disabled with vehicles has been launched at a cost of SR 1.5 billion with the intention of distributing 4000 vehicles during phase one of the program with each car valued at SR 150,000.

The Ministry of Social Affairs has included all disabled people who fit the requirements of the program. It has recently chosen a hydraulic carrier attachment for the wheel chair which will allow the handicapped person to move comfortably.

Applications for the vehicles can be lodged through 38 rehabilitation centers spread across the Kingdom. The applications will also need to be approved by a medical, psychological and social committee who will examine the cases and define the type of disability.
