The funeral of the Sri Lankan maid who died in a cylinder explosion took place in Riyadh on Monday.

Fathima Safaya, 38, was severely burned in an accident at the Saudi household where she works in the early hours of May 15 in Riyadh.

Safaya, who hailed from a town 50 km from the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, is a divorcee with two sons.

She had come to the Kingdom to provide for her sons and had been working at the household for the past 15 months.

The burial took place at the Ummul Hammam burial grounds following afternoon prayers at the King Khalid Mosque in the same quarter. The victim’s sponsor was also present at the funeral prayers, performed at the mosque.

A large number of Sri Lankan community members were present to pay their last respects to their compatriot.
