RIYADH: Following the enforcement of regulations related to hoverboards, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry found 150 shops in violation of the law and confiscated 700 machines.
Ministry's inspectors carried out more than 1,500 Inspections to follow up on retailers’ commitment to regulations laid down by the ministry.
According to an official, the ministry has been conducting inspection campaigns to verify how far the shops are committed to the terms and regulations of selling hoverboards.
Hoverboards should conform to the Trade Data System and the Anti-Commercial Fraud Law. Producers and distributors must be committed to print trademarks on all products, besides placing a label describing the item data and showing the price before it is offered for sale on the market, as well as providing a minimum warranty of two years.
The ministry had issued a decree to organize the sale of the hoverboard, indicating the risks arising from its use.
The ministry has advised that this device should not be considered a child’s toy since it poses a risk to the lives of children and may cause serious injuries. The decree stated that such devices should not be offered in toy shops, and sold only in sports shops.
The ministry pointed out that the inspection tours aimed at preventing violations of the rules and regulations issued, and to take all legal procedures against violators.
The ministry said the inspection tours would continued to deter violators and to ensure commitment to the rules and regulations.
The ministry also said that the device must not be used by those under the age of 16. It called on consumers not to buy hoverboards from street vendors or unknown sellers who do not provide purchase invoices or warranty certificates, stressing the importance of keeping such documents to safeguard their rights.
The MCI also draws the consumers’ attention to the risks of lithium batteries, which might cause fires. To avoid this situation, it is recommended not to leave the device in charging mode while asleep, and not to recharge right after use because the battery may overheat and ignite, especially if the battery is of low quality. It is recommended to leave the device for a while to cool and then recharge.
Commitment to safety measures, such as wearing a helmet, hand protection and kneepads, is of high importance. Therefore, the MCI recommends that the smart scooter not be used on streets and public roads, and users take caution against dust, sand, holes, bumps or debris on the road, such as timber or bushes that may lead to a fall.
The ministry called on all citizens and residents to cooperate in combating all types of commercial fraud, through lodging their complaints and observations via the toll free number,1900, or through the application of a commercial notification.
