JEDDAH: Terrorists are using drugs, rest houses and video games to recruit young people in the country, according to Abdulelah Al-Sharif, secretary-general of the National Commission for Narcotics Control.
Al-Sharif said that the recent killing of a mother and injuries to father and brother by their twin sons was a catastrophe for the country and should serve as a wake-up call for citizens. Those who commit such crimes were either drug addicts or had been influenced by criminal organizations, he was quoted as saying.
He said parents must be careful how they raise their children, including their religious instruction. They should not deal with their children in a harsh manner, nor pamper them. They should also have constant contact with their schools and friends to determine whether they have been influenced by deviant ideas.
He also warned that they could be influenced by games on the Internet, including social media, because there was no control over the content on some of these sites.
There is also need to create a greater awareness about the dangers of drugs. “Hashish and Captagon pills are closely connected with murders and killings. I am personally against the view of some parents that they do not want to educate their young children on the dangers of drugs,” he was quoted as saying.
He also warned that there must be closer monitoring of rest houses especially those rented out to youths, where drugs may be used and illicit relationships prevalent.
He urged the Ministry of Education to put in place activities and programs to help parents in the education process, and to instill in them a sense of nationalism and patriotism.
“The Ministry of Culture and Information should also change its policies and procedures and deliver its message through the media in line with Vision 2030. The Sports Authority must also offer attractive programs,” he said.
He urged the Ministry of Labor and Social Development to develop neighborhood centers so that youths stay away from coffee shops and rest houses.
