The Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution said on Wednesday that it would punish those responsible for the imprisonment of innocent people by taking legal action against them.

“We’ll visit prisons to hear complaints of prisoners and detainees and investigate the legality of their imprisonment,” said Saud Al-Hamad, head of the bureau in the Eastern Province.

He said the bureau would take immediate steps for the release of people arrested without any reasons or remained in detention without any charges.

“We’ll take legal action against those responsible for the arrest of such people,” he said in comments published on Wednesday.

The bureau has two important powers; to level charges against individuals and prevent their freedom of movement. “But the law explains there are persons who should be detained and there are others who should be released.”

He said the newly issued criminal proceedings law that came into effect on Dec. 3, 2013 would tackle the issue in a better way.
