The Ministry of Education and Saudi Aramco have signed an agreement to set up a traffic education program at all Eastern Province schools.

The deal comes in the wake of rising accidents maiming and claiming the lives of students and teachers on the country’s roads. Some parents have even suggested that traffic safety should be part of the curriculum for high school students.

Khaled Abdel-Salam, secretary general of the ministry’s executive committee for traffic safety, said the program would be implemented in all EP schools, and soon include Riyadh and Jeddah schools, in cooperation with Abdul Latif Jameel Community Initiatives.

It targets more than one million students at all education levels, he said.

Abdel-Salam said that the ministry is currently implementing a national education and awareness strategy in the Kingdom targeting 5 million people.
