Two prisoners from Buraidah prison are still being treated at a local hospital after being shot by policemen during a prison riot in which they attempted to attack members of the police force.

They also set fire to three prison cells. Two policemen were injured after being attacked by prisoners and suffered contusions and bruises, but later left the hospital. A female who was working at the prison is still being a treated for mild asphyxiation. A security spokesman said that Buriadah prison does not house terrorists or persons charged with subversive acts.

Inmates are mostly drug traffickers, murderers, rapists, or burglars.

Abdullah Al-Harbi, spokesman for the Prison Department, said several prisoners set fire to three administrative offices at around 5 p.m. last Saturday, after which there was commotion among the prisoners. Policemen took control of the situation and members of Civil Defense put out the fire.

Two policemen and two prisoners were injured and were hospitalized.

Authorities promptly began investigating the causes of the fire and the inmates responsible for the unrest that ensued thereafter.
