Eastern Province police yesterday confirmed that an unknown assailant or assailants fired at a security checkpoint near Awamiyya in Qatif, injuring an 18-year-old woman and her 2-year-old brother.
Eastern Province police spokesperson Ziad Al-Riqati said the girl and her brother were in a car driven by their father when they came under fire near the checkpoint.
“The girl was hit in the lower abdomen while the boy received bullet injuries in his right foot,” said Al-Riqati. “They were immediately transferred to a hospital and police have launched a massive hunt for the assailants.”
The firing at the checkpoint took place at 2 p.m. yesterday. An hour earlier, Al-Riqati said, there was a firing at the Qatif prison, possibly by the same assailant or assailants. A police patrol in Tarout area also came under fire, he said.
