JEDDAH: A Saudi scholar has slammed an academic from the United Kingdom for claiming that Saudia Arabia promotes extremism.
Ala Yousuf Al-Ghamdi, visiting professor at Leeds University, confronted Ziauddin Sardar, a British citizen of Pakistani origin, for making the claim at a literary conference in Bradford, a website has reported.
Sardar had alleged that the Kingdom was the source extremism, and funded extremist mosques in the UK.
Al-Ghamdi said that Sardar should blame Iran for extremism and terrorism in the region, which has been spread by Hezbollah, the Muslim Brotherhood and other organizations.
Al-Ghamdi said that the Kingdom had been the victim of many terrorist attacks over the years, and has been involved in several initiatives to counter this threat.
The Saudi scholar received applause from the audience, with the chairman of the session endorsing his views.
Sardar has written several books on Islam and Muslims, particularly those living in Britain.
Al-Ghamdi is a former head of the department of English at Taiba University.
