Alkhobar’s Municipality has destroyed large amounts of food items after they were found unfit for human consumption, a municipality official said.

The food items included 505 parcels of vegetables, burgers, chicken pieces, 13 kg fish, 24 kg nuts, 93 kg meat from unknown sources, 30 kg beef liver, 56 kg sheep hooves unfit for human consumption, 18 kg mutton, 54 kg poorly stored beef, 74 kg chicken not properly stored, 15 kg sweets and food well past their sell-by dates.

Essam Al-Mulla, chairman of the Alkhobar Municipality, said that the campaign is conducted regularly and has been intensified recently during Eid Al-Fitr days to cover malls and food warehouses to ensure their compliance with the terms of transferring, storing, preparing and displaying food and other products.

"The inspectors will check the quality and the validity of the vegetable oil used for frying food and the storage places. The workers’ hygiene will be checked as well to ensure they wear gloves and head covers and have valid health cards." Al-Mulla added.
