RIYADH: Students in the capital were overjoyed with the good news of 19 Saudi universities ranking among the QS top 100 Arab Universities for the year 2015-2016.
The QS World University Rankings, an annual university ranking system published by Quacquarelli Symonds of the United Kingdom, judged King Fahd University for Petroleum and Mineral Resources (KFUPM) first among the top 100 Arab universities for the second year in a row, while King Saud University (KSU) emerged third, King Abdulaziz University (KAU) fourth and Um Al-Qura University ranked 18th.
Ecstatic over the high ranking in the list of the best Arab universities Mohammed Zeyad, who is pursuing his bachelor’s degree, expressed his overwhelming happiness saying, “KFUPM, KSU and KAU ranking among the top four are a matter of pride for us.”
“These institutions of higher learning are leading the vanguard in the Kingdom for academic excellence by giving a lot of weight to research and development to achieve greater academic excellence, and for sure forms prestigious educational centers for us to be proud of,” he added.
Echoing this sentiment, Saad Khalid said, “being a student myself, it gives me immense pleasure to hear that our universities are doing exceedingly well in the rankings for Arab countries.
It is a reflection of the hard work done in these universities by the students and the faculty members, which were acknowledged by the QS World University Rankings.”
He, however, maintained that it would be better to create more of institutions of higher learning along the successful patterns of KFUPM, KSU and KAU in other major cities of the Kingdom to maximize the benefits that will contribute handsomely in the Saudization plan under Nitaqat program as well as in realizing Vision 2030 to help diversify the Saudi economy with the expansion on a knowledge-based economy.
High school graduate Abdullah Ahmad said, “having top universities among the Arab countries gives great satisfaction and immense pleasure to high school graduates like us who can now look forward to continuing their higher studies in the Kingdom itself rather than going abroad.”
