A Saudi scholarship student died in a hospital in the US on Jan. 31, after succumbing to gunshot wounds inflicted by an attacker a few days earlier.

According to reports, several men had accosted Mansour Al-Yami while he was traveling from Irvine to Santana in California to visit friends. The men had robbed him of his personal belongings including his mobile phone. When he told them he did not have any money, and tried to leave his car, one man shot him in the liver and lungs, with some of the metal of the bullets lodging near his spine, according to reports.

Al-Yami was taken to a medical center in Irvine where he received treatment and started to recover.

However, when he did not have SR75,000 to pay for the treatment, the hospital moved him to a modest rehabilitation center in San Dimas, where his health deteriorated and he died.

Mohammad Al-Eisa, the Saudi cultural attaché in the United States, called the brother of the deceased, who is studying in the same city, and expressed his condolences. Al-Eisa said arrangements would be made for the body to be transported to the Kingdom.

Police in the city have launched an investigation into Al-Yami’s murder, and have questioned his brother and companions at the hospital. An autopsy will be conducted. The identity of the assailant has not been determined.

This is the second killing of a scholarship student in California.

A year ago, a man who had pretended he wanted to buy his car killed Abdullah Al-Qadi. Al-Qadi’s body was abandoned in a deserted area where it was found by the police. A suspect was arrested and is now facing trial.
