A Saudi mother of five has woken up from a one-year coma at an Eastern Province hospital, a local newspaper reported.

The patient, in her 30s, had lost total consciousness following a car accident, in which she had suffered concussion and multiple fractures in different parts of her body, the daily said.

The patient was brought to the region’s specialist hospital, fully unconscious, and was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU), where she had been placed under a respirator, fed by a gastric tube and provided due treatment, Samir Qarah, medical director and head of the ICU, told the media.

Bashir Rababah, an ICU internal medicine consultant, said a medical team removed the respirator and created a breathing slot through her neck four months into her coma.

Over time, the medical team observed gradual improvement in her condition and degree of consciousness, which necessitated the removal of the breathing catheter, after which the patient was gradually fed through the mouth, he said.

“An excellent medical team and rigorous follow-up throughout the year contributed to the success of treatment and helped the patient regain memory," he said.
