NEW YORK: Tampa Bay’s James Loney hit a go-ahead infield single in the 13th inning to give the Rays a 3-2 win at the New York Yankees on Wednesday, closing the gap between the American League East rivals to one game.

The Yankees’ city rivals, the New York Mets, also lost as Ichiro Suzuki turned back the clock with a homer in Miami’s victory, and Houston notched its sixth straight victory by downing San Diego.

Yankees reliever Chasen Shreve (1-1) — their seventh pitcher for the game — walked Steven Sousa with one out in the 13th. Sousa advanced on Asdrubal Cabrera’s groundout, and Evan Longoria was intentionally walked to bring up Loney, who came up with the winning hit.

New York’s Alex Rodriguez struggled at the plate, going 0 for 6 with four strikeouts and hitting into a double play which ended the game. He remains one home run shy of tying Willie Mays for fourth place on the all-time list at 660. He is batting .139 since April 17. It was just his fifth four-strikeout game, and first since 2008.

Miami’s Suzuki hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to seal the Marlins’ 7-3 victory against the Mets.

Ichiro’s first home run of the season was only his second in his past 487 at-bats.
