JEDDAH: The only indoor Filipino basketball organizer in town has rebranded and launched its inaugural tournament last Friday at the Saudi Champions Academy court on Television Street on the outskirts of Riyadh.
Divided into two categories namely Inter-Company Bonafide Non-Rated and Barkadahan Non-Rated the Television Sports Association (TSA) First Conference evening division got off the ground with the traditional parade of teams highlighting the opening ceremony.
TSA was formed under Chairman Rocky Gil to bring the fun and camaraderie back among the basketball enthusiasts let alone the promotion of healthy lifestyle in the Filipino expatriate community.
Chief guest at the opening was Mohamed Bayoumi, a Sudanese with a Filipino heart, friend of the community and recipient of the Presidential Banaag Award.
In his speech, Gil urged each team and players to give their commitment in making the 1st conference a success. He said this is just the beginning of more conferences to come. He also reiterated that the main goal of the association is to instill camaraderie and the spirit of sportsmanship in every player, as basketball is a very effective outlet for OFWs to fight homesickness. Gil added his group will continue the mandate they have started to provide quality basketball entertainment to the community.
The first trophies to go up for gabs for Best in Uniform went to AIC and Naval Base.
Right after the inspirational messages from Chairman Rocky and chief guest Bayoumi, the 1st game took place between Al Nahdi Pharma and Naval Base (KFNB).
The team of Abdul Majid and Jun Laron, Al Nahdi Pharma, controlled the whole game and prevailed in first game opener by 89-75.
In the second game, Rabya overpowered the AIC 88-68.
Rabya took the momentum in the 1st quarter of the game and never looked back enjoying leads of as big as 20 points before the last two minutes of the 4th quarter.
Indeed, the tournament launch a huge success. Teams that paraded at the opening were AIC-AFCO, Naval Base, AL Nahdi, Rabya, LeMall Alshaya, SETE, SAMACO-Automotive, Al Maruj, Toshe, Dabarkads Pilipinas, Tropang Drinkers, Radwa and Solid North.
