RIYADH: Noel A. Alipoyo found his A-game yet again to win the FGA Annual Tournament and Danny Naval Masalama last Friday at Dirab Golf & Country Club.
Alipoyo, senior cameraman with media company OR Madarat, shot a sparkling net score of 68 in glorious sunshine to emerge overall champion in the 18-hole stroke play competition that doubled as farewell event for Naval, former president of the Filipino Golf Association and engineer by profession who is to leave on exit-visa only after spending 19 years in the Kingdom with a water treatment company.
Alipoyo, who has had a pair of international successes including the 69th PAL Interclub Media Golf Tournament in March back in the Philippines, won by one stroke from Filipino banker Philip Cortejos.
Cortejos, chief risk officer at Alinma Bank, could have made the event an advance celebration of his birthday yesterday with a victory but fell short on 69 from a gross score of 88 and 19 handicap.
Alipoyo, who wielder a hot putter and enjoyed not a few par saves in a solid round, matched Cortejos’ 88 but claimed the biggest prize with a higher handicap of 20.
Outgoing FGA President Joe Vallado was second runner-up on 70 (89-19). Noynoy Palce finished third runner-up on 71 (95-24), while the fourth runner-up was Edwin Valera who won by countback from Fem Baracoso after both players tied on 72 from gross scores of 90 and 92 and handicaps of 18 and 20 respectively.
The top six winners in the twin tournament received their trophies during the awards ceremony in which the Bicolano Naval, 58, was presented with a plaque of appreciation. Also, Vallado thanked Dirab Golf & Country Club and Manager Bouchaib El Jadiani for their cooperation in helping make the event a success.
FGA new set of officers
Meantime, Alan Malawanda was elected president to lead a new set of officers for the association.
Luke Lacaden is the vice president, Al Gatbonton secretary, Vallado treasurer and Nick Palce auditor.
In his first official act as FGA head Malawanda e-mailed everyone a tournament schedule for 2016-2017 season that includes the Kalayaan Cup tournament on June 3 at Dirab Golf & Country Club. Malawanda said they will invite Ambassador Ezzedin Tago as chief guest and the one to induct the FGA office bearers. Another major on the schedule is the Ambassador’s Cup in October.
