1st Filipino Community Basketball League (FCBL) Basketball Tournament at the Sheraton Jeddah Hotel Sport Complex court.
Panino’s survived the 42-point output from Lisztian Amparado and beat ALJ Fedex 80-75 in a Division B (Group of Star Studded Teams) matchup in which Best Player Arold Magat scored 23 points to go with the 15 by Alarcon and 14 by Valderama.
Struggling with losses to start its campaign, Francis Magat’s Panino’s-Uncle Majid squad is now knocking at the door of the semifinals on 3-3 in a tie with Muhaidib and Tamimi Brethren.
Tamimi Brethren needed five-minute extra period to beat Muhaidib 99-96 in the game preceding the Panino’s-ALJ on Thursday.
Nesma, which handed Fedex’s only other defeat in the tournament, is 3-2 with SMDC as the other team outside of Fedex guaranteed a place in the semis. Fedex closed out its schedule on 5-2 while SMDC is 4-2 with a game in hand.
Like ALJ Fedex, Falcunit and Brawlers, a young and energetic team, both qualified No. 1 for the semis following their Week 14 victories over Holdup Boyz 83-75 and Jotun by default in the Division C2 (Group of Bae’s Teams) and Division C3 (Group of Wannabe Teams).
Falcunit toted final win-loss record of 6-2 after its elimination round games while Brawlers sported 6-2, ahead of Jeddah Hilton and Sharbatly, which also advanced on 6-1 and 5-2 respectively.
AVK-Pioneers followed Falcunit to the next round by beating Freyssinet 98-82 to improve to 6-1. Kalmado, which won by default over Olive Arabia in the first game Thursday, and Yummy Yummy are 5-3 and 5-2, as they looked set to join AVK and Falcunit in the last four with the Holdup Boyz having a longshot chance to make it.
Dar Jana kept winning after losing its first game against Division C1 leader ALJUF and is now 5-1 thanks to a 79-32 annihilation of Mohd Baksh in the second game Friday.
Jollibee is the third semifinalist in C1 with KFAFH 2 the likely fourth semifinalist.
Elsewhere, Syrian IKK maintained its grip on first place in the centerpiece Division A by again beating KabayanGents 104-76 in the nightcap Friday while SACO defeated Dbarkadz 81-78 in a C3 Division match.
After the eliminations the knockout semifinals will be played Feb. 9 and 10 followed by the finals Feb. 16 and 17.
