RIYADH: Saudi national players Othman Almulla and Fahad Almansour lived up to their ranking as the top-seeded pair to win the 2nd Annual DHL Open Texas Scramble Golf Tournament 2016 on Saturday at Dirab Golf & Country Club.
With a 1 team handicap, Almulla and Almansour were dialed in on a pleasant sunny day to shoot a sparkling 58 and dominate the field in the 2-ball Texas Scramble format competition that attracted 60 teams and 120 players.
The winning pair made the turn on 6-under 30 capped by an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole, but they were even deadlier coming in with a 29 in a back nine charge in which Othman and Fahad birdied all but two holes and the last six on the trot.
Contacted by Arab News, Othman said Fahad told him “I had plenty of length to reach so just hit one out there and we’ll be good to go.
“So I hit a nice high drive past the bunkers and had 240 left, then I hit a 4-iron to 18 feet and holed the putt,” added Othman of their eagle on No. 9.
The Korean duo of Dong Soon Kang and Chanhwi Lee, with a 9 handicap, finished runner-up four strokes back on 62 from a gross score of 71 (35-36), while DHL’s very own, Omar Hariri, teamed with Yasser Al Rumayyan to clinch third place on 64 (65-5).
The father-daughter tandem of Clark Windross and Amy Windross was one stroke further back in fourth place. Samir Fostok and Mattias Ardfelt rounded out the first five winners on 66.
Winning the skill awards for men’s and ladies longest drive were Graham Gunn and Pia Enborg and for closest to the pin was Jason Kniffen.
Harir, VP Sales of DHL, golf course owner Khaled I. Abunayyan and Dirab Golf Committee Chairman Tariq Javed attended the prize distribution ceremony and handed over prizes to the winners.
