RIYADH: Othman Almulla will be leading what is being touted as the strongest Saudi national golf team ever assembled for an international competition following the team’s qualification event held over the weekend at the Dirab Golf & Country Club for the 36th Pan Arab Golf Championship next month in Oman.
Enjoying a rich vein of form, Almulla shot rounds of 68, 69 and 68 for a three-day total of 205, 11-under par on the flat but challenging layout.
Kingdom No. 1 Almulla told Arab News in an interview from Kuwait that he had 13 birdies and an eagle during a dialed-in performance Friday and Saturday. He made the eagle in the afternoon round Friday on the first hole where he holed out from 20 feet after a monster drive and a 3-wood that found the green.
Joining Almulla on the team to include coach Ali Belhareth are exciting young talent Saud Al Sharif, Ali Al Sakha and Khaled Attieh.
Al Sharif, from the Eastern Province and who will turn 17 next month, fired rounds of 76-75-76 for a three-round total of 227, while Al Sakha, formerly based in the United States, totaled 233 (82-77-74).
The 21-year old Attieh, who divides his time between Dubai and the US, has been seeded into the team and was not required to play the qualification event.
“We’re all very excited for the coming Pan Arab tournament. This national team is the strongest ever for a tournament overseas,” said Almulla who is keeping his fingers crossed that they would be able to deliver a performance to make the country proud.
“All four would be able to help the team,” he added.
Almulla, who keeps a day job at the Saudi Aramco in Dhahran, said all four members of the team are in Kuwait for a MENA Tour event, adding they all made the cut for the final round Wednesday.
Almulla credits their experience on the MENA Tour for the turnaround in their game. He said they did seven MENA Tour events thus far.
The Oman Golf Committee will host the 36th staging of the Pan Arab, a men’s four-team three-to-count competition, to be played at the Ghala Golf Club Nov. 7- 12.
Majeed Sorour, technical committee chair of the Saudi Golf Federation, was in charge of the qualification tournament for national team members.
The other results form the Saudi national team qualification event are as follows:
Abdullah Hussain 233 (82-75-76), Abdurahman Almansour 235 (78-84-73), Fahad Almansour 237 (75-82-80), Turki Al Hussain 238 (81-77-80), Faisal Salhab 81-XX-XX-XX.
