CINCINNATI: Jake Arrieta pitched his second no-hitter in a span of just 11 regular-season starts as the Chicago Cubs shut down Cincinnati in a 16-0 rout on Thursday.

Arrieta, the reigning Cy Young award winner as the National League’s best pitcher, threw the first no-hitter of the season.

Among other results, the World Series champion Kansas City moved to the top of the American League Central division by beating Detroit while their nearest rivals, the Chicago White Sox, lost narrowly at home against the Los Angeles Angels, while Baltimore beat Toronto to open a 3-1/2 game lead atop the AL East.

Chicago’s Arrieta (4-0) struck out six and allowed only six balls hit out of the infield. He threw 119 pitches, retiring Eugenio Suarez on a routine fly to right field to end it.

Arrieta threw his first career no-hitter late last season. He is among several pitchers in the past decade to pitch two no-hitters, along with Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Tim Lincecum and Homer Bailey.

The Reds hadn’t been held hitless in a regular-season game since 1971.

Arrieta is the first Cubs pitcher to win his first four starts in a season since Greg Maddux went 5-0 in 2006. Ken Holtzman is the only other Cubs pitcher to throw more than one no-hitter in the modern era, doing it in 1969 and 1971.

Kansas City’s Edinson Volquez tossed seven sharp innings as the Royals beat Detroit 4-0.

Volquez (3-0) retired the first eight batters and only had to wiggle out of one bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning. He struck out five.

Mike Moustakas hit a homer for the Royals.

Los Angeles’ Mike Trout hit a two-run homer and reached base four times, helping the Angels win 3-2 at the White Sox to end of a10-game road trip on a high.

Trout connected on a fastball from John Danks (0-3), driving the ball 419 feet to left-center with two outs in the fifth — he had been 0 for 8 with four strikeouts against Danks. Trout also singled and walked twice.

Angels starter Jered Weaver (1-1) gave up one run in seven innings.

Baltimore’s Manny Machado doubled in the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning as the Orioles rallied to beat Toronto 3-2.

Rookie Joey Rickard, who had three hits, singled with one out and moved up on a passed ball by Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin. Machado then hit a fly ball that dropped between two fielders, scoring Rickard.

Arizona won 6-2 at San Francisco to complete a four-game road sweep.

Yasmani Tomas hit a go-ahead home run in the fourth and Paul Goldschmidt drove in two runs for the Diamondbacks, who notched a fifth straight win and completed their first four-game sweep ever in the Giants’ 17th-year ballpark.

The benches cleared and both teams were warned in the eighth after Josh Osich hit Arizona’s David Peralta with a pitch for the second straight day. Peralta walked toward the mound, but there were no ejections.

Miami’s Ichiro Suzuki had two hits, scored twice and made two sliding catches in right field for Miami, who used a makeshift lineup to beat Washington 5-1.

Texas’ Ian Desmond drove in three runs with his first homer of the season to lift the Rangers to a 7-4 win against state rival Houston.

A.J. Griffin (2-0) gave up back-to-back doubles in the first inning but only one more run for the remainder of his six frames. He outpitched 2015 AL Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel (2-2), who conceded 13 hits in six innings.

The Rangers have won four straight and have swept three straight home series from the Astros for 10 total games.

Oakland completed a three-game road sweep of the New York Yankees, with Khris Davis and Coco Crisp hitting homers on consecutive pitches in the seventh inning to set up a 7-3 win.

Pittsburgh’s Gerrit Cole pitched six impressive innings for his first win this season as the Pirates routed San Diego 11-1.

Los Angeles’ Yasmani Grandal doubled in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning to give the Dodgers a 2-1 win at Atlanta.

Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria and Curt Casali homered off former teammate David Price, ending his game in the fourth inning, as the Rays beat Boston 12-8.

Seattle’s Robinson Cano hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning, lifting the Mariners over Cleveland 10-7.

Minnesota won its first road game of the season, after seven losses, by downing Milwaukee 8-1, led by by Ricky Nolasco, who struck out seven.
