Filipinos and Chinese are joking about their territorial dispute as their national teams prepare for the 2015 FIBA-Asia Championship finals on Saturday night.

China made it to the finals after crushing defending champion Iran, 70-57, in their semifinals match Friday in Changsa, China.

The Philippines’ Gilas Pilipinas earned the right to face powerhouse China by roughing up Japan, 81-70, also on Friday.

The winner in Saturday night’s finals match will get the gold medal and qualify automatically for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, with the Philippines seen as underdog.

China’s head coach Gong Luming was quoted by Asian media as saying he was “very confident” of his team’s victory that he was willing to bet the islands being disputed by China and the Philippines in the South China Sea.

“I am so confident that I'm willing to make a bet. If we lose, they can have the Spratly Islands,” he told a press conference after his team’s victory over Iran, according to Manilalink.com.

Filipinos were also talking about betting the disputed islands on social media.

“Tonight's FIBA Asia finals between the tiny Philippine basketball team and host giant China is more than just the right to enter into the Olympics. This is not just a story of David versus Goliath. National pride is at stake and the West Philippine Sea,” Manila-based journalist Manny Mogato posted on Facebook.

While showing a brave front, some Filipino netizens seem to admit that Gilas Pilipinas’ chances beating China’s team was not that high. Many of them joked about giving away the politicians or political parties they dislike if China wins.
