DALLAS: Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk scored a power-play goal in overtime to give the Red Wings a 3-2 win at Dallas on Monday, preventing the Stars regaining the outright lead in the NHL’s Western Conference.

The Red Wings boosted their playoff chances in the intense Atlantic Division race, where the top four teams are separated by just four points.

Elsewhere, Derek Stepan scored the late winner as the New York Rangers edged Columbus, and San Jose had a convincing victory over Montreal.

Detroit’s Datsyuk put a rebound past goaltender Antti Niemi at 2:33 of overtime while Mattias Janmark was off the ice, serving a penalty for hooking. Detroit had failed to score in its previous 20 power plays over seven games.

Rookie center Andreas Athanasiou scored the first two goals for Detroit, which moved into third place in the Atlantic Division, one point ahead of Boston and three behind co-leaders Florida and Tampa Bay.

Dallas’ Vernon Fiddler put in his own rebound to tie the score with 1:31 to play in regulation, with Niemi off for an extra skater. Fiddler also assisted on Colton Scevior’s second-period goal.

By earning one point for the overtime loss, the Stars tied Chicago atop the Central Division and Western Conference.

Detroit has won on its past seven visits to Dallas, dating back to 2010.

New York’s Stepan scored a short-handed goal with 2:48 to play to give the Rangers a 2-1 win against Columbus.

Mats Zuccarello also scored for the Rangers, who moved to the overall second-best record in the East, ahead of Florida and Tampa Bay.

Cam Atkinson scored his 20th goal of the season for the Blue Jackets, but could not net a golden scoring opportunity in the final second.

San Jose’s Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton each had three points in a dominant performance from the Sharks’ top line, producint a 6-2 win over Montreal.

Pavelski had two goals and one assist, while Thornton scored one goal and assisted on two others to help the Sharks move within two points of second-place Anaheim and four points of leader Los Angeles in the Pacific Division. Brent Burns also had a goal and two assists, and Melker Karlsson and Nick Spaling added goals for San Jose.

Brendan Gallagher and Torrey Mitchell scored for the Canadiens, who fell seven points behind Pittsburgh in the race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Montreal has lost six of its past seven against the Sharks.

Pittsburgh strengthened its grip on that playoff spot by routing Arizona 6-0, with Patric Hornqvist notching his first career hat trick.

Tampa Bay extended its winning streak to seven and grabbed a share of top spot in the Atlantic by defeating Toronto 2-1, with Tyler Johnson scoring both goals.

Philadelphia’s Brayden Schenn also had his first career hat trick, inside the first two periods, as the Flyers beat Calgary 5-3.
