BUENOS AIRES: Argentina advanced to the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup on Monday, beating Brazil 3-2 after Federico Delbonis defeated Thomaz Bellucci 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 in a match that took two days to complete.

The match had been suspended because of darkness on Sunday with Delbonis leading 1-0. It started late after Leonardo Mayer needed 6 hours, 42 minutes to beat Joao Souza in the longest singles match ever played in the Davis Cup.

The 83rd-ranked Delbonis dropped the second set after play resumed on Monday but quickly rebounded to regain control.

Argentina, which will next play Serbia, is returning to the World Group quarterfinals for the first time since 2013.

The South American powerhouse had been upset by Italy in the first round last year, dropping to the World Group playoffs. The Argentines had reached at least the semifinals of the World Group every year since 2010 before the setback in 2014.

Argentina is seeking its first Davis Cup title. It was runner-up four times: 1981, 2006, 2008 and 2011.

Brazil was trying to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2001, when three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten still played. The Brazilians were semifinalists in 1992 and 2000.

Canada punched their Davis Cup quarterfinal ticket as Vasek Pospisil beat Japan’s Go Soeda in straight sets in the decisive fifth match of their World Group first-round tie.

Pospisil, ranked 62nd in the world, fired 14 aces in his 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Soeda, who was drafted for singles duty in place of Tatsuma Ito, who fell to Milos Raonic in straight sets to open the tie on Friday.

The Canadian needed just one hour and 49 minutes to subdue Soeda, after world number four Kei Nishikori had kept Japanese hopes alive with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Raonic.

“It was very competitive and a big fight for both of us,” Raonic said. “It comes down to a few points here and there.”

Nishikori, the 2014 US Open runner-up needed three hours and four minutes to stretch his career head-to-head record over the sixth-ranked Canadian to 5-2.

“It is never easy but I was really enjoying the match today,” Nishikori said.

Canada, who had lost six prior Davis Cup meetings with Japan, next face Belgium, who eliminated Switzerland in Liege as the holders made do without stars Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka.

Canada are trying to improve on their best Davis Cup showing to date, a 2013 run to the semifinals where they fell to Serbia in Belgrade.
