JEDDAH: The husband-and-wife tandem of Alex and Carmen Duma became the story of the OFBC (Overseas Filipino Bowlers Club) Monthly Tournament for March when they won the men’s and ladies divisions respectively at the Iceland Bowling Center here.
Alex was unchallenged, despite a late wobble, from start to finish of the five-game series with handicap format competition to win with plenty to spare on 965. He shot scratch games of 187, 186, 196, 185, 151.
A distant second on 934 was Sergio Modar who had lines of 164, 170, 146, 181, 153.
Jhun Ejanda overhauled his 37-pins deficit after the fourth game on Nap Patayan to clinch third place on 923 (169, 148, 178, 140, 198). Patayan settled for the third spot on 919 (171, 236, 158, 155, 169)
While Class B bowler Alex went wire-to-wire his wife Carmen had to battle from 23 pins down after the third game to be the ladies’ champion in the monthly event leading up to the Bowler of the Year finals in December.
Carmen totaled 903 in five games, well clear of second place Delia Javing who shot 876 on lines of 163, 137, 142, 117, 147.
Marlyn Mangunay took the third position on 870 (131, 146, 131, 168) with Carol Rio in fourth place with her effort of 868 (129, 143, 149, 121, 106).
The winners received cash prizes during the awards ceremony in the OFBC’s third monthly event.
Under the tournament format, bowlers play five-game series with handicap sudden death with the top four in each division to receive cash prizes. In case of ties, the high and low rule will be applied to break the deadlock.
The Bowler of the Year finals have been expanded to include not only the monthly winners but those from the wildcard phase and the seeded qualifiers as well.
