JEDDAH: As part of its mandate to promote sports and physical fitness among students, Mahd Al Uloom International School organized its 8th annual sports meet dubbed MIS Atletico ‘16 at the weekend in a festive atmosphere at Xtep outdoor stadium in Ammer Fawaz in Jeddah.
The opening ceremony had the children in their uniforms assembled at their respective house arenas. Highlighting the ceremony was the marchpast teams from Emerald, Ruby, Topaz and Sapphire houses.
The function began with an invocation of Holy Qur’an by Master Saved of Class VI. Dr. Firoz Mulla, principal of the school, welcomed the guests and the students. Yahya Khaleel Noorani, operations manager, presided over the function and exhorted the children to carry forward the MIS tradition of excellence.
The chief guest, Muhammed Iqbal, chairman of Managing Committee, International Indian School Jeddah, officially opened the sports meet by lighting the beacon. He was given the guard of honor by the school pupil leader and the scout team. He commended the efforts of MIS in providing opportunities to students to showcase their talents and also emphasized the importance of sports and games at an early age.
“The most important thing is not winning but taking part,” said Iqbal.
Abdu Raheem and Abdu Rabb, directors of the school, presented Iqbal with a memento in appreciation of his support of the event. The school’s sports captain Master Muhammed Abdul Haneefa led the oath of sportsmanship.
The members of the Board of Directors Abdu Rabb and Abdu Raheem, Operations Manager Yahya Khaleel Noorani ,School Superintendent Mansoor Ali, Academic Executive Officer Marakkar, Administrator Abdullah, Ashraf and Muahmmed Ali also were present on the occasion.
Sports Secretary Mansoor CK proposed the vote of thanks and briefed the students about the importance of physical training and sports.
Events contested on the day included races over 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters, invitational relays, high jump, and long jump.
Also featured, apart from athletics, were football, tug-of-war, kabadi and parlor games like potato gathering, balloon breaking, and sack race.
Emerald House was declared overall champion, scoring with maximum points and Ruby House finished runner-up.
The medals and trophies for the winners were given away at the awards ceremony by the directors of school Mujeeb A.R Nagar, Abdurabb Chemamd and Abduraheem Wandoor. The memorable event came to a close with the singing of national anthems.
