HOUSTON: Houston’s Mike Fiers pitched the second no-hitter in the major leagues in just nine days, leading the Astros to a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday in a result that impacted the West divisions in both the American and National Leagues.

The Astros stretched their lead in the AL West to 3-1/2 games ahead of the Los Angeles Angels, who suffered a home defeat at the hands of Toronto, while the Dodgers’ advantage atop the NL West was trimmed to 1-1/2 games ahead of a San Francisco team that had an impressive win at Pittsburgh.

The Pirates missed a chance to make up further ground on NL Central leader St. Louis, which lost at San Diego.

Houston’s Fiers (6-9) need 134 pitches to complete his no-hitter; the fifth in the big leagues this season and hot on the heels of Hisashi Iwakuma’s feat for Seattle earlier in the month.

Acquired by the Astros at the trade deadline to help with their playoff push, Fiers has been stellar in his three starts for Houston.

Having never thrown a complete game in his five-year career, Fiers was dominant Friday. He struck out 10 and retired the final 21 batters.

San Francisco pitcher Madison Bumgarner homered, and also struck out six in 6 1-3 innings to lift the Giants over Pittsburgh 6-4.

Bumgarner crushed a fastball 418-feet over the wall in left field in the second inning; a two-run shot that gave the Giants an early four-run lead and all the cushion he would need on the mound.

Bumgarner (15-6) allowed two runs and one walk to win his fourth consecutive decision.

Marlon Byrd had three hits, including a two-run home run, in his debut with San Francisco after being acquired in a trade with Cincinnati.

San Diego’s Yangervis Solarte hit a two-run homer during a wild five-run fifth inning that lifted the Padres over St. Louis 9-3.

The Cardinals, who still have the best record in the majors at 77-44, committed three errors in the fifth while pitcher John Lackey (10-8) allowed four hits, a walk and a wild pitch in that frame.

Travis Jankowski had two hits, an RBI and scored a run in his big league debut as the Padres made it six wins from seven games.

Toronto’s David Price struck out nine during eight innings to guide the Blue Jays to a 9-2 win at the Angels.

Josh Donaldson drove in three runs in the opener of a key series between the current AL wild-card holders, and helped the Blue Jays notch their 17th win in 21 games.

Kansas City’s Johnny Cueto had his worst start for the Royals as they lost 7-2 at Boston.

Cueto (2-2) had allowed just six runs in four previous starts for the Royals, but this time he allowed six earned runs before leaving after six innings. The other run came from a Royals error.

Boston’s Henry Owens (2-1) showed why he is regarded as a top prospect, limiting Kansas City to four hits in eight innings.

Cleveland’s Carlos Carrasco struck out 11 to steer the Indians to a 7-3 win against the New York Yankees.

Carrasco (12-9) gave up one run in 6 2-3 innings. He has permitted just six runs over his past five starts.

Carlos Santana homered for the Indians, who have more wins than losses in road games this season despite a disappointing overall campaign.

Minnesota’s Kurt Suzuki hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to cap a comeback 4-3 win against Baltimore.

Baltimore was 51-1 when leading after seven innings, and All0Star reliever Darren O’Day (5-2) entered the game with a 1.15 ERA and a run of 11 straight scoreless appearances.

However a walk, a pop single down the right-field line and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, and all three advanced on a fly ball by Eddie Rosario. Suzuki followed with a mistimed hit over the drawn-up infield.
