RIYADH: Looks like this trio of Filipino golfers all woke up on the right side of the bed to win division honors in a rare sweep during the season’s first Monthly Medal Golf tournament last Friday at the Palms Golf Club InterContinental Riyadh.
Senior golfer with 6 handicap Joe Vallado, an engineer by profession, led the victory charge by winning the A-Division (handicap 0-6) crown on stunning 41 points in the Stableford format competition that attracted good number of InterCon regulars that enjoyed a good day out on the course as the weather conditions improve by the day. Vallado’s total was the equivalent of 5-under in medal play.
Riyadh’s first grass course was in superb playing condition, pin positions were tricky and the greens were player friendly as scores indicated.
Runner-up to Vallado was promising Korean junior golfer Jalhan Kim, a 4-handicap who returned 2-over par 34 points.
Another InterCon favorite Alan Malawanda led a 1-2 Filipino finish in B-Division (7-12), shooting 1-over 35 Stableford points, with compatriot Willy Tamonte on 30 points as the runner-up.
In the C- Division (13-18), Filipino banker Banjamin Santuyo won first place on 32 points while Pakistani banker Zafar Khan was the runner-up on 31 points.
Joeun Kim and Vallado won the nearest to the pin awards.
InterContinental Recreation Manager Mounir Melliti expressed his delight at the success of the event and handed out prizes to the winners during the awards ceremony.
Assistant Golf Club Manager Baby Joseph thanked the players and InterContinental Riyadh Hotel nanagement for their continued support. Golf professional Anwar Naz assisted in the staging of the tournament that kicked off the 2016-2017 season at the club.
The event concluded with a sumptuous buffet lunch.
