Indonesia emerged as champion in the 2014 Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) mission table tennis tournament here.

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia hosted the event at the Chancery in the Diplomatic Quarter here last week as part of the “Eight ASEAN embassies in sports” activities organized each year on rotation by the ASEAN Riyadh Social and Sports Committee (ARSSC).

All the eight diplomatic missions of ASEAN countries in Riyadh participated namely Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, and each diplomatic mission sent a team of four players that vied in three categories — men’s singles, women’s singles and open doubles (men’s or women’s doubles or mixed doubles).

In the men’s singles category, Ramzy Wahyu Pujakesa (Indonesia) emerged champion, while Doan Kien Trung (Vietnam) was 1st runner up and Rene Salazar (Philippines) 2nd runner up.

In the women’s singles category Estrelita Tongio (Philippines) was the winner with Nashiroh Ishaq (Indonesia) 1st runner up and Hamsa Hisham Al Khaldi (Malaysia) as the 2nd runner up.

In the open or mixed doubles category Suprijadi and Gugun Gunawan (Indonesia) were declared champion, while Doan Kien Trung and Le Van Hoan (Vietnam) took the 1st runner up and Winston Dean Almeda and Roger Bunao (Philippines) 2nd runner up.

On the strength of its victories in the men’s singles and mixed-doubles categories and 1st runner up finish in the women’s singles category Indonesia emerged as the best team and champion of the ASEAN mission’s tournament.

ASEAN diplomats present on the occasion lauded the tourney organized in the month of August to mark the celebration of ASEAN’s 47th anniversary on Aug. 8, saying it will certainly go a long way to help promote the ASEAN community as a united family.

The tennis tournament is first of eight sports events lined up by the organizing ARSSC with each member country to sponsor at least one event.

The current chair of the ASEAN Riyadh Committee is with the Vietnam embassy.

The host embassy also served special Indonesian culinary in a luncheon for all participants and their supporters at the end of the event.
