JEDDAH: Jeddah United won consecutive games in a single night against Lebanese Community Basketball Team to stay on course for a finals berth in the Open Rated B Division in the 2nd Orient Watch Cup and 13th Filsama Basketball League at Rawdah court on Madinah Road here.
Jeddah United and the Lebanese returned to the court for the five-minute extra period of a heated game played the night before on Friday last week. Jeddah United won by 79-72 in overtime. The regulation period ended 67-all when, with both teams in penalty situation, no bonus free throws were awarded as the foul on Mohannad Amir was whistled after the final buzzer had sounded.
The game was the last in the first round eliminations for both teams. After a brief rest, Jeddah United and the Lebanese squad resumed their battle to begin the second round of the four-team centerpiece division of the tournament sponsored by Orient Watch Watch brand under the Al-Hussaini and Al-Yahya Investment Group.
With Mohannad again at the helm of the Jeddah United charge, this young team mentored by Naoufal Uariachi won, 67-60, albeit this time there was not much tension with Jeddah United establishing control in the fourth quarter.
The back-to-back wins gave Jeddah United a leading 3-1 win-loss record in the division with idle Egypt on 2-0, Lebanese 1-2 and Tamimi Global 0-3.
In leading Jeddah United to the overtime victory Mohannad finished with a game-high 30 points. Salman and Fadhi each added 13 points. The Lebanese, who battled back from an early 21-5 deficit in the game and nearly won were it not for poor shooting in the overtime period, had 26 points from Alim, 11 from Fattal and 8 from Al-Qubaisi.
In their second game of the night, Jeddah United drew 22 points from Mohannad and 10 each from Salman and Baby Shaq while the Lebanese had 17 points from Alim, 14 from Al-Qubaisi and 9 from Daher.
Aljuf Toyota seized control in the last two quarters after a surprisingly tough first half and went on to post a 92-82 victory over Silent Assassin and bounce back from its only defeat by BMG in the Open Non-Rated Strong Division.
Anthony Villegas was Aljuf’s main man, scoring 21 points while Fadhi Al-Taweel and the lanky Reyes each tallied 14 points. Rey Razon top-scored for Assassin with 27 points despite getting into foul trouble in the payoff period.
BMG, widely tipped to meet Aljuf in the championship, brought down SMDC 101-98 thanks to the trio of Tacio Ali, Kusain and Komie Ibrahim with 23, 20 and 19 points respectively.
Reyes and Diego Domalogdog led SMDC with 24 and 16 points.
