JEDDAH: Defending men’s champion Jeddah United Hitters-UGAFCO brought down International Medical Center (IMC) in a tense two-setter 25-22, 25-23 during the fourth week hostilities in the Kalayaan Cup Volleyball Cup 3rd Conference at Trio Ranch & Country Club.
The result left the title holders as the only unbeaten team in the men’s division at 3-0 and in all likelihood they are set to finish the round robin eliminations as the No. 1 team for the semifinal with only the lowly Bader International School left in their schedule.
The JUH-IMC tussle was widely anticipated and only a late collapse by IMC took the drama away from an otherwise absorbing contest that kicked off another heavy six-game schedule at Trio Ranch.
Jeddah United Hitters returned to the court, after the second game won by the Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital Fusion men against Bader International School later in the day, and hammered out a routine 25-8, 25-23 victory over Jeddah Blue Spikers.
The victory completed a fourth week double for Jeddah United Hitters who went 4-0 for the tournament while the Spikers suffered their first defeat in three games. Interestingly, JUH’s opponents Friday last week came to the match both without a defeat.
The Fusion men evened their record at 2-2 following the 25-11, 25-17 Bader victory. The Fusion women was not as fortunate, going down in defeat against Volleyball Stars 26-28, 25-21, 15-7 in the nightcap.
The women’s division defending champion King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC) remained unscathed in the tournament, rolling to its fourth win by beating Bader International School 25-7, 25-23, 15-3 in the fourth game.
IMC women managed a split for the hospital team after they beat Pusong Pinoy Buhay Jeddah Warriors 25-8, 25-15 in the fifth game.
