JEDDAH: KabayanGents won their first game in the centerpiece Division A (Group of powerhouse teams) against SMDC 92-89 in a Thursday thriller during the eighth week in the 1st Filipino Community Basketball League (FCBL) Basketball Tournament at the Sheraton Jeddah Hotel Sport Complex court.
It was another busy week with a heavy nine-game schedule – four on Thursday and five on Friday, as the organizers try to finish the tournament within the four months time frame.
Kicking off the week’s hostilities is the Division C3 (Group of wannabe teams) match pitting Brawlers against Sharbatly in the first game Thursday. Brawlers won by 68-66 with Alvin Dinglasan as Best Player of the game.
The win boosted the Brawlers to 3-1 in a tie with idle Triple Ace while Sharbatly went down to its second loss in five games in the seven-team group where Jeddah Hilton leads the pack on 4-1 following its 73-70 triuph over Dbarkadz.
Niala led Brawlers with 15 points, Pendon tallied all but one of his 10 points in the fourth quarter while Dinglasan had nine points.
Panino’s-Uncle Majid Rice & Toppings of Francis Magat won its second straight game after dropping the first two, 84-77 against Muhaidib in Division B (Group of star-studded teams) where six teams are vying for places in the semifinals.
Arold Magat, in one of his best offensive games, scored 29 points to become the Best Player while leading Panino’s-Uncle Majid to victory. His older brother Noy Magat backed him up with 16 points. Alarcon added 15 points.
Tom Basa led Muhaidib with 26 points while Viscayno contributed five three-pointers for 15 points.
In C2 (Group of Bae teams) Falcunit handed AVK Pioneers their first defeat, 90-86, in the nightcap Thursday.
Best Player Carreon enjoyed a breakout performance, hitting 30 points including 10 in the fourth quarter at the helm of Falcunit which also drew 15 points from Bajas and 10 from Velasquez.
The result left Falcunit on 4-1 and Pioneers on 3-1.
Yummy Yummy (3-1) kept pace of Falcunit in the division beating Rimmel 81-73 in the first game Friday. Tacliad, with 16 points, was the Best Player of the game. Yummy Yummy teammates Del Rosario and Raymundo scored 15 and 10 points.
Ziyad Pascual won Best Player honors for Cris Melebo’s KabayanGents. A good passer, point guard Pascual finished on 24 points. Mark Lagria added 27 points while Jay Liam contributed 16 points.
Dar Jana of Hassan Zeineddein also won consecutive games after losing its first game against ALJUF in C1 when it brought down Jollibee 64-53 in the second game Friday. Khorbatly with 21 points was named Best Player while playing coach Zeineddein had 12 points.
Manlangit and Garcia led Jollibee’s losing cause with 12 and 9 points.
Elsewhere, Gulf Taleed crushed Hotel Sofitel 87-52 in C3 and Kalmado edged Freyssinet 82-81 in a C2 clash Friday.
