JEDDAH: The stage is set for the semifinals with defending men’s and women’s champions, Jeddah United Hitters-UGAFCO and KAMC Lady Spikers, looking solid bets to go all the way to a title sweep in the Kalayaan Volleyball Cup 3rd Conference at Trio Ranch & Country Club.
Jeddah United Hitters finished the round robin eliminations on 5-0, their procedural 25-8, 25-7 victory over Bader International School in the first game sealing their No. 1 spot for the semifinals.
Finishing as the No. 2 in the men’s division with a 4-1 win-loss record was International Medical Center (IMC), which was extended to three sets but then managed to hack out a 21-25, 25-21, 15-12 win over Jeddah Blue Spikers in the penultimate match of a heavy eight-game schedule to close the eliminations.
JUH will be up against No. 4 Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital (DSFH) Fusion and IMC against third-ranked Jeddah Blue Spikers (3-2).
The Fusion men handed Blue Spikers a 25-23, 25-19 defeat in the second game in what turned out a double whammy for the JBS. The victory gave the Fusion men a 2-3 card. PPB Jeddah Warriors and Bader Jackdaws were both eliminated on 1-4 and 0-5 respectively.
PBB won the fight out of the cellar against Jackdaws 25-17, 25-12, 15-7 in the third game for its lone victory in the tournament organized by Dreamstar Productions for Sports under the leadership of Al Moran Bacleon with support from sponsors Fawri-MoneyGram, OSN, SMDC, Emirates Airlines, Giordano, Indomie and Pepsi.
Like their men’s counterparts KAMC Lady Spikers finished round robin play at 5-0 with the DSFH Fusion ladies their latest victim in the increasingly popular event. The scoreline was 25-9, 25-20 to Fusion ladies.
Despite the defeat the Fusion ladies advanced to the semifinals at No. 4 by beating PBB Jeddah Warriors 23-25, 25-20, 15-12 in the nightcap. The victory gave the winners a 2-3 record.
Volleyball Stars emerged as the No. 2 squad next to KAMC following their 25-10, 25-19 thumping of PPB Jeddah Warriors in the fifth game. The Volleyball Stars are 4-1 with their only defeat at the hands of rampant KAMC.
The women’s semifinals pit KAMC against DSFH and Volleyball Stars against IMC, which closed out its schedule with a 25-13, 25-8 win over Bader International School.
On paper, the defending men’s champions looked to have the material they needed to carry them to the biggest prize. Their deep bench includes a pair of outstanding players in Saudi Montasser Essam Moamenah and Pakistani Ali Murad.
