ST. LOUIS: Chicago’s John Lackey struck out 11 batters in seven scoreless innings against his former team and drove in a run, leading the pacesetting Cubs to a 5-0 win at St. Louis on Monday.

The result opened a three-game gap between the NL Central division rivals in the early stages of the new season.

Among other results, Cincinnati broke clear late to defeat Colorado, and Hector Santiago put in a commanding pitching performance to guide the Los Angeles Angels past the Chicago White Sox.

Lackey (3-0) shone for the Cubs against his old team, but not so much Jason Heyward, who went 0 for 4 at the plate on his first trip back to Busch Stadium since leaving the Cardinals, but did take two nice catches in right field, with the boos of the crowd ringing in his ear.

Chicago is a major league-best 10-3 and off to its best start since 1970. Chicago has won 15 of its last 16 regular-season road games, going 6-1 this year.

Cincinnati’s Trevor Story hit a solo homer to snap an eighth-inning tie and the Reds pulled away to beat the Rockies 5-1.

Story added to his incredible rookie start, hitting his NL-leading eighth homer in only 13 games. Ben Paulsen completed the rally with a three-run homer.

Reds starter Jordan Lyles (1-1) got his first victory in nearly a year, giving up only one unearned run in seven innings.

Los Angeles’ Hector Santiago matched a career high with 10 strikeouts over seven crisp innings as the Angels beat the White Sox 7-0.

Santiago (1-0), who was traded from the White Sox to the Angels in 2013, led the Angels to their first shutout win of the season.

Chicago starter Carlos Rondon (1-2) got only one batter out before he was pulled, having given up six hits and two walks.

Miami’s Jose Fernandez overcame early wildness and regained his winning touch at home to steer the Marlins past Washington 6-1.

Fernandez (1-1) threw 54 pitches in the first two innings but didn’t allow a hit until the fifth. He lasted six innings and improved to 18-1 at Marlins Park, with the lone loss in his previous home start.

Boston pitcher Craig Kimbrel walked a batter with bases loaded to tie the game, then gave up a two-run single that put Toronto ahead to stay, winning 4-3.

Arizona’s Jake Lamb hit a tying homer with two outs in the ninth inning and doubled home an insurance run in the 11th, rallying the Diamondbacks past San Francisco 9-7.

Phil Gosselin scored on Jean Segura’s go-ahead infield single with two outs in the 11th. Lamb, who homered off closer Santiago Casilla two innings earlier, made it a two-run cushion with his RBI double.

Segura and Lamb had three hits apiece. Welington Castillo homered and drove in two runs for Arizona in a game that ended 9 minutes shy of midnight on the West Coast.

Rubby De La Rosa (1-3), scratched from his scheduled start in this series opener after coming out of the bullpen over the weekend, struck out three for the win.

Brad Ziegler earned his third save this season and 31st consecutive overall — an ongoing franchise record.

Gosselin reached on a leadoff single against Chris Heston (1-1).

New York’s David Wright homered twice for his first two RBIs this season as the Mets went deep four times to beat Philadelphia 5-2.

Minnesota had a season-best 14 hits in just six innings to beat Milwaukee 7-4 in a game that was shortened because of rain.
