LUBBOCK, Texas: Texas Christian’s Aaron Green caught a tipped pass in the back of the end zone with 23 seconds left to give the No.4-ranked Horned Frogs a thrilling 55-52 win against state rival Texas Tech on Saturday in the opening clash of college football’s Big 12 conference for both teams.

The victory was part of the day’s pattern that saw all those top-10 ranked teams in action produce mostly high-scoring victories.

Top-ranked Ohio State started strongly in a win against Western Michigan, No.2-ranked Michigan State was less convincing in victory over Central Michigan, and Mississippi was too good for a competitive Vanderbilt.

Texas Christian’s winning play came on fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line. Trevone Boykin’s pass was high to Josh Doctson, but he got a hand on it and Green grabbed the ball as he fell out of the end zone. A video review confirmed Green had control of the ball and got a foot in bounds.

The Red Raiders didn’t give up after TCU’s late touchdown. On the final play of the game — after time expired and a defensive penalty on TCU — quarterback Patrick Mahomes found DeAndre Washington for a 24-yard gain and two further passes got the ball to Jakeem Grant, who was pushed out of bounds at the 10 to end the game.

Ohio State’s Cardale Jones threw two early touchdown passes and Adolphus Washington returned an interception 20 yards for a score to give the Buckeyes a 38-12 win against Western Michigan.

Jones was much improved on a week ago, when he was benched in the second quarter. He finished 19 of 33 for 288 yards with an interception before being replaced late in the game.

Ohio State has won 17 straight dating back to last season.

Michigan State’s Gerald Holmes ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns and the Spartans overcame a sluggish performance to beat Central Michigan 30-10.

The Spartans have scored at least 30 points in a school-record 12 consecutive games, but did not look particularly good offensively for most of this one. Connor Cook threw for only 143 yards, and the Chippewas kept their upset bid alive until the final period.

Michigan State, which has already lost two key players to season-ending injuries, lost standout tackle Jack Conklin to an apparent knee injury.

Mississippi’s Chad Kelly threw for 321 yards to lead Ole Miss to a 27-16 win against a feisty Vanderbilt.

Jaylen Walton ran for a season-high 133 yards in an otherwise mediocre performance for an offense that had been averaging 64 points per game.

The red zone offense was particularly bad. Ole Miss had to settle for three field goal attempts — two converted — when inside Vanderbilt’s 20.

Louisiana State’s Leonard Fournette ran for a career-high 244 yards and two touchdowns as the No.8-ranked Tigers beat Syracuse 34-24.

Fournette, who is regarded as a leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy as the player of the season, had his second straight 200-yard game and fifth straight 100-yard game.

Tre’Davious White returned a punt 69 yards for another score, and LSU used big plays to hand Syracuse its first loss this season despite being called for 14 penalties.

Baylor’s Seth Russell matched a school record with six touchdown passes as the Bears routed Rice 70-17.

Russell threw for 277 yards — with three of his five first-half TD passes going to Corey Coleman — and Shock Linwood ran for 158 and a score to help the Bears extend the nation’s longest home winning streak to 18 games.

Baylor, the national leader in yards and points per game coming in, had 444 yards at halftime and finished with 793.

Notre Dame’s C.J. Sanders scored on a 50-yard punt return to spark the Fighting Irish to a 62-27 win against Massachusetts.

That return began a run of four straight touchdowns for the No.6-ranked side, turning a tight game into a 48-20 contest by early in the second half.

Georgia’s Nick Chubb ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns and also caught a scoring pass to lead the Bulldogs past Southern 48-6.

Chubb had scoring runs of 9 and 49 yards in the third quarter. The 49-yarder gave him 12 straight games with at least 100 yards rushing. He scored on a 24-yard pass from Greyson Lambert in the first quarter.

The No.7-ranked Georgia led 17-0 in the first quarter before easing off ahead to next week’s visit from No. 12 Alabama.

UCLA’s Josh Rosen was sharp in his first Pac-12 road game, throwing for 284 yards and accounting for three touchdowns in the Bruins’ 56-30 win against Arizona.

UCLA turned three Arizona turnovers into touchdowns in the first half while building a 28-point lead.
