ARLINGTON, Texas: Kyle Seager had three hits, including a home run, as the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 4-2 on Saturday to move 1½ games ahead of Detroit for the American League’s second playoff wild card.

Seager hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to level the score at 2-all, then singled and scored in the Mariners’ two-run eighth against Neal Cotts (2-9).

Seager is hitting .362 with five home runs and 16 RBIs in 69 at-bats against the Rangers this season.

Danny Farquhar (2-1) worked two scoreless innings to earn the victory, and Fernando Rodney got the last three outs for his AL-leading 43rd save.

Detroit, meanwhile, fell to the San Francisco Giants 5-4, its third loss in four games.

Andrew Susac hit a two-run double in San Francisco’s four-run first against David Price and Buster Posey had a solo homer among his three hits as San Francisco won for the eighth time in nine games against Detroit, including a sweep of the 2012 World Series.

Miguel Cabrera homered twice for Detroit and Victor Martinez hit a solo drive in the third for his career-best 30th homer.

The Tigers remained 2 games behind Kansas City in the AL Central division after the Royals lost to the New York Yankees 6-2.

Brandon McCarthy (6-4) won for the second time in six starts, and the Yankees feasted on Kansas City’s bullpen after Royals starter Danny Duffy left because of an injury following his first pitch.

In the National League playoff race, the Pittsburgh Pirates picked up two wins against the Chicago Cubs to pull within a half-game of Milwaukee and Atlanta for the second wild card.

The Pirates topped the Cubs 5-3 in 11 innings in the resumption of a game that was suspended Friday night, then topped the Cubs 5-0 in the second game.

Mark Melancon (3-4) pitched two scoreless innings for the win in the first game, while Francisco Liriano (4-10) struck out nine in six innings in the second game.

The Brewers, meanwhile, lost for the 10th time in 11 games, falling to the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3.

Matt Adams and Oscar Taveras homered as the Cardinals opened a four-game lead in the NL Central division.

Lance Lynn (15-8) pitched six effective innings as St. Louis won for the seventh time in its last eight games. Trevor Rosenthal got three outs for his 43rd save in 48 chances.

Atlanta kept pace in the wild card race when Evan Gattis hit a leadoff homer in the 10th inning to send the Braves to a 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins.

David Carpenter (6-3) pitched 1 2-3 innings for the win and Craig Kimbrel finished for his 43rd save in 47 opportunities.

Elsewhere in the league, Albert Pujols hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the ninth inning for his 2,500th hit, leading the Los Angeles Angels to their third straight win over the Twins, 8-5.

Pujols also had a solo homer in the third against Phil Hughes for a 3-2 lead, scoring his 1,500th run on his 25th home run this season.

The Dodgers’ Dee Gordon hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning and Adrian Gonzalez homered to secure a 5-2 win over Arizona.

The Dodgers’ 14th victory in 18 meetings with the Diamondbacks kept the defending NL West champions two games ahead of San Francisco in the division standings after the Giants’ win at Detroit.

Brian Wilson (2-3) got three outs for the victory and Kenley Jansen pitched a scoreless ninth for his 41st save.

Boston’s Clay Buchholz pitched into the seventh inning as the Red Sox hurt the Blue Jays’ fading playoff hopes with a 4-3 victory.

Toronto began the day five games behind Seattle for the AL’s second playoff wild card.

Oakland’s Jed Lowrie hit a game-ending RBI single in a three-run ninth inning to beat Houston 4-3.

The Athletics were six games back of the Angels coming into the day, but were also on top of the playoff wild-card standings.

Colorado’s Drew Stubbs had a tiebreaking RBI single in the 12th inning to lift the Rockies past San Diego 7-6.

In other games, Cleveland beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1, Philadelphia topped Washington 3-1, Tampa Bay defeated Baltimore 3-2 and Cincinnati edged the New York Mets 2-1.
