MIAMI: Miami ended its run of losses against the New York Mets this season by coming through with a 4-3 victory over the National League leaders on Wednesday after Michael Morse hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning.

The Mets’ crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees, had a mixed day. They beat Tampa Bay to move two games clear atop the American League East division, but also learnt that pitching ace Masahiro Tanaka will be out for at least a month.

Houston made it nine wins from 10 games with a rout of San Diego, while Minnesota edged Detroit to cost the Tigers the lead in the AL Central.

Miami had lost its previous five games against the Mets this season but ended that run in a close contest.

Marlins closer Steve Cishek, who blew a save on Monday by allowing a three-run homer, began shakily in the ninth when he walked the leadoff hitter before closing it out.

The Yankees won 4-2 against Tampa Bay, with catcher Brian McCann hitting two doubles to drive in three runs.

The win was overshadowed by the revelation that Tanaka will be out for some time because of a mild forearm strain and right wrist tendinitis.

Chase Whitley (1-0) was making a spot start that was meant to give Tanaka and other pitchers extra rest. But he could find himself in the rotation for a while after giving up only one run in five gritty innings.

The Yankees have won 10 of their past 12 against the Rays.

Houston’s George Springer homered and drove in five runs to power the Astros to a 14-3 win against San Diego.

Evan Gattis added a two-run shot for the Astros and Chris Carter connected for a solo drive as Houston hit three home runs at spacious Petco Park for the second consecutive night. The AL West leaders set season highs for runs and hits (16).

Houston is 9-2 on the road, equaling the best 11-game start away from home in team history.

Springer hit a two-run homer in the seventh and added a two-run single in the eighth as he tied his career high for RBIs.

Minnesota’s Mike Pelfrey turned in his second consecutive strong start to guide the Twins to a 3-2 win against Detroit.

Pelfrey (2-0) begrudgingly started the season in the bullpen after spending most of 2014 on the disabled list. He struck out seven and allowed one earned run over seven innings. He has won his past two starts while allowing only one earned run in 14 innings.

Kurt Suzuki had two hits, including a single up the middle in the seventh inning to give Minnesota the lead.

The Chicago Cubs won a fourth straight game by downing Pittsburgh 6-2.

Dexter Fowler had three hits and two RBIs for the Cubs, who scored all their runs with two outs.

Chicago pitcher Travis Wood (2-1) extended his solid start to the season by allowing two runs in seven innings, lowering his ERA to 3.04.

San Francisco’s Madison Bumgarner pitched eight sharp innings to steer the Giants to a 2-1 win at the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bumgarner (2-1) gave up one run and one walk while throwing 110 pitches. Last year’s World Series and NLCS MVP is 3-1 lifetime against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.

Kershaw (1-2) allowed two runs over seven innings.

St. Louis set a season high for runs as the Cardinals cruised to an 11-5 win against Philadelphia.

Matt Carpenter tripled and doubled for the Cardinals, who had 15 hits.

St. Louis starter Michael Wacha (4-0) drove in two runs and pitched 5 2-3 innings to win for the fourth time in four starts.

Toronto scored eight runs across the third and fourth innings to set up an 11-8 win at Boston, snapping a four-game losing skid.

Arizona pitcher Archie Bradley was hit in the face by a line drive but walked off the field, apparently avoiding serious injury, as the Diamondbacks beat Colorado 12-5.

Kansas City’s Kendrys Morales hit a three-run homer which capped a six-run seventh inning that lifted the Royals to an 11-5 win at Cleveland.

Washington set a franchise record by coming from eight runs down to beat Atlanta 13-12, with Dan Uggla driving in five runs — three on a homer in the ninth inning — as the Nationals ended a run of seven-straight losses.

Oakland also ended a string of defeats — four in this case — by beating the Los Angeles Angels 6-2, with Sonny Gray striking out six and walking one over eight impressive innings.

Seattle’s J.A. Happ produced nine strikeouts to double his season tally and guide the Mariners to a 2-1 win against Texas.

Cincinnati’s Johnny Cueto gave up three hits over eight innings during his latest dominant performance against Milwaukee, leading the Reds to a 4-2 victory over the Brewers.
