HAMBURG: Argentina’s world No. 46 Leonardo Mayer captured his first ATP title on Sunday when he fought back to defeat top seeded Spaniard David Ferrer, 6-7 (3/7), 6-1, 7-6 (7/4) in the Hamburg final.

Mayer becomes the lowest-ranked winner of an ATP World Tour 500 tournament since number 54 Radek Stepanek clinched the Washington title in 2011.

The 27-year-old Mayer is enjoying one of the best spells of his career. Last month, the right-hander advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon and made his first ATP World Tour final in Vina del Mar earlier this year.

“I can’t believe it,” said Mayer. “I was able to do it against Ferrer, who is one of the best players on this surface. I’m really happy and it still hasn’t sunk in that I won.

“At the start of the match, I was a little tense. But I relaxed and started to play better. He also made some mistakes that got me back into the match. I tried to enjoy it and that’s why I won, I think.”

The 32-year-old Ferrer was contesting his 44th tour-level title match and dropped to a 21-23 finals record.

Wozniacki routs Vinci for Istanbul title

In Istanbul, top seed Caroline Wozniacki won her first title of the year and 22nd of her career on Sunday when she defeated second-seeded Italian Roberta Vinci 6-1, 6-1 in the Istanbul WTA final.

The former world No. 1 has now won a WTA title every year for the last seven years, winning her first three in 2008, three more in 2009, six in 2010, six in 2011, two in 2012, one in 2013 and now one in 2014.

“I’m happy to have won my 22nd WTA title — it’s a great feeling. I’m happy how the final went today. I served well and pushed her around the court, and I really dictated the match,” said Wozniacki.

Vinci added: “I tried to play aggressively like always but made a lot of mistakes. It’s tough to play like that against Caroline because she puts everything back in the court, and it was tough for me to stay in the rallies today. But I’m happy with my week and Caroline just played much better than me.”

Barthel wins Swedish Open for third career title

In Bastad, Sweden, Germany’s Mona Barthel won her third career title on Sunday when she claimed the Swedish Open with a 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) win over South Africa’s Chanelle Scheepers.

Barthel, 23, made the most of an open draw which had seen Serena Williams withdraw and seven of the top eight seeds losing in the first round.

It meant the Bastad event was the first WTA tournament since Hobart in 2009 where no seeds had made the quarter-finals.

“It’s been an amazing week for me — I cannot believe I won the title,” said world number 61 Barthel whose two previous titles came in Hobart in 2012 and Paris in 2013.
