JEDDAH: True to its mandate to organize events for members all year long, the Overseas Filipino Bowling Club (OFBC) opened the first in a series of monthly tournaments to culminate in the Bowler of the Year finals in December at the Iceland Bowling Center here.
Leading the winners to draw first blood in the OFBC Monthly Tournament for January last Friday were Sergio Modar and Malou Nidoy, champions in the men’s and ladies divisions respectively.
Modiar, a Class D bowler with a 24 handicap per game, rolled a five-game series with handicap of 1,038 pinfalls to emerge easy winner over veteran Class A bowler Nap Patayan, who tallied 1,009.
Modar enjoyed a fast start with 208 and 193 in his first two games to go with 162, 166 and 189.
Patayan started strongly with scratch games of 209-215 only to collapse and see his hopes virtually evaporate with 147 in the third canto. He shot 223 and 185 in the last two games and settled for the first runner-up position.
Class C bowlers Conrado Baltazar and Rico Bulalayao, each with 18 handicap, took the second runner-up and third runner-up on 976 (153, 221, 160, 172 and 180) and 951 (169, 166, 181, 178 and 167).
Like Modiar Nidoy, winner of the OFBC anniversary tournament last December, had little trouble taking the ladies crown with a five-game series of 916 including handicap. Vivian Sacramed was first runner-up on 888, Susan Patayan second runner-up on 882 and Carmen Duma third runner-up on 878. Nidoy shot lines of 146, 162, 152, 170 and 166.
The winners received cash prizes during the awards ceremony in the OFBC’s first monthly event that attracted 33 players including 22 in the men’s division.
Under the tournament format, bowlers play five-game series with handicap sudden death with the top four in each division to receive cash prizes. In case of ties, the high and low rule will be applied to break the deadlock.
The Bowler of the Year finals have been expanded to include not only the monthly winners but those from the wildcard phase and the seeded qualifiers as well.
