JEDDAH: True to form, NGHA-KAMC and Play Time swept their way to the women’s division and men’s division title respectively at the close last Friday of the Makati Express Cargo-Sarawat Superstores 1st Kalayaan Volleyball Cup 2016 at the Trio Ranch & Country Club in Briman District here.
Both champion teams finished the tournament unbeaten in five games. NGHA-KAMC brought down Dr. Suleiman Fakeeh Hospital 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 in the final, a best-of-five affair.
In the knockout game for third place in the women’s division, Dr. Erfan Bagedo Hospital defeated Saudi German Hospital .
“I was not nervous,” Bhel Rojo said of playing such a big match as a freshman. “I think it was because I know that those fans that were out there tonight were all supporting us and had our backs,” she added.
Prior to the game, two KAMC team members were awarded regular season honors. Benilyn Valida was Best Server and bagged the SMDC Choice Award as Best Player of 1st Conference KVC, and Gina Alanguilan Best Spiker, Conference MVP and Emirates Airlines Final MVP. Alvin Salenga (Kabalikat Civicom) and OSN with Triple J Kitchenette alsl sponsored Choice Awards for Best Player of 1st Conference KVC. DFHS duo of Helen Daygon and Carly Campo were named the Best Setter and Best Receiver while Zoraida Ibada of DEBH was adjudged Best in Defense.
Other awardees: Marina Ortiz (DEBH) Best Manager, Andrew Lacsamana (NGHA-KAMC) Best Coach and DEBH Sportsmanship Award for women’s division.
Play Time needed four sets to put away second-seeded Jeddah Blue Spikers 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 25-18 in the men’s final.
“We needed to win this match and I thought our guys did some really good things tonight,” Play Time coach Rod Ryan Cailles said. “Our guys also showed a lot of maturity in how they handled getting ready for the match,” he added.
Play Time made the championship victory all the more sweet by winning all but one of the six major awards. Play Time’s Erickson Dimalanta was honored as Best Spiker and he also received the Conference MVP Award as well as the Final MVP courtesy of Emirates Airlines, Salenga (Kabalikat Civicom) and OSN with Triple J Kitchenette Choice Awards for Best Player of 1st Conference KVC. Emerson Semsem was the Best Setter and took the SMDC Choice Award as Best Player of 1st Conference KVC, Jamil Robert Antiporda Best Server, Joseph Albert Gajo Best Receiver and Adam Rico de Guzman s Best in Defense. Akbar Karim of Jeddah Blue Spikers was the Best Blocker.
Other awardees: Ahmed Ali (Saudi German Hospital) Best Manager, SGH Sportsmanship Award, Rod Ryan Cailles (Play Time) Best Coach. Play Time team members each received individual trophy. Jeddah Blue Spikers were awarded the runner-up trophy and Saudi German Hospital third place trophy.
Chief guest at the awarding ceremony was Welfare Officer Rosemarie C. Cleofe of the POLO (Philippine Overseas Labor Office) who came with her assistant Cora Monroid. The other VIP guests were Emirates Airlines Account Manager Juan Ramos and his family, SMDC representative Allan Castillo, Triple J Kitchenette head Jun Abris and Kabalikat Civicom President Salenga.
