RIYADH: Malaysians Norhalim bin Mohammed Nasir and Mohammed Fuad bin Abdulrahman emerged the champion team in the three-way race for top honors in the 3rd Riyad Bank Golf Tournament 2017 at Nofa Golf Resort on the outskirts of Riyadh.
Norhalim and Mohammed Fuad combined for a net score of 64 in a tie with two other pairs namely Matthew Clement-Neal Carberry from the UK and Ronald Stermer-Lennox Vaughan.
To break the ties the back nine scores were compared with Norhalim and Fuad on 35 to pull clear of Clement and Carberry 36 and Stermer-Vaughan 37 in the twoball Texas Scramble format competition.
The winning team, with a handicap of 8, carded a gross score of 72 (37-35), one under on the par-73 6,335-yard Safari-themed layout.
Norhalim and Mohammed Fuad managed to keep their card basically uncluttered sandwiching consecutive bogeys from No. 3 with birdies on the first and sixth holes.
Coming home, they had further birdies on Nos. 12 and 17 against a bogey on the 14th hole.
Though the pin placement was quite challenging to get birdies, the Malaysian duo both lauded the well organized event with the course in “impeccable condition.”
“Only in its third edition the Riyad Bank event has always attracted a strong field from the Riyadh golfing community. The participants had an enjoyable round. All in all the Riyad Bank Golf Tournament is considered as best tournament in the annual golf calendar of Nofa Golf Resort,” said Norhalim.
“A much awaited tournament, the players were made to feel comfortable by the good work on the course by the Nofa staff and only had to focus on their games,” said Fuad.
“I’m pretty sure the golfers are looking forward to playing again in next year’s tournament,” added Fuad.
Clement and Carberry, who matched the winners’ 1-under par round, settled for second place. Stermer and Vaughan took the third position while Frank Gleeson and Pat Moran rounded out the first four winners on 65 from a gross score of 72 and 7 handicap.
Norhalim and Fuad took home the top prize of Ping G drivers in addition to the champion trophies. Clement and Carberry each received Ping G metal wood, Stermer-Vaughan Titleist golf bag and Gleeson-Moran Taylormade wedge.
Riyad Bank executives Redha Al-Madani, assistant manager, Campaign Management; and Senior Vice President Ahsen Kamal attended the awards ceremony and handed over prizes to the winners.
Nofa Equestrian Resort GM Eamonn Hanlon presented a sponsor recognition plaque to Al-Madani for Riyad Bank’s support in the promotion of golf in the Kingdom.
Golf Club Manager Nishad Muhammed Kunju thanked the participants and the tournament sponsor Riyad Bank for their continued generous support to Nofa Golf Resort.
Nishad said the 2016-2017 season ended with Friday’s tournament and the new season will start with the annual tournament in October.
