Petron Blaze coach Gee Abanilla now believes that he and his Boosters would have to be wary of a new foe: Complacency.

After taking the full measure of Rain or Shine for the second straight night Wednesday for a 90-88 win and a 2-0 lead in their PBA Governors’ Cup Final Four series, the rookie coach is not about to let their guards down.

“The chance (of making the Finals) has definitely increased (after tonight’s win),” Abanilla told reporters as the Boosters moved within another win of returning to a title series playoff for the first time in two seasons.

“But there is also a chance that they can come back. Complacency is the enemy (left) for us right now. If we do things right, we’ll be OK.” June Mar Fajardo played a monster game, finishing with a career-high 26 points on top of 14 boards – nine of them offensive – as he scored 14 of his total off second chance points to downplay his dominance in the paint.

Aiding Rain or Shine’s downfall was the fact that it failed to convert on a single triple attempt in 18 total tries to establish a new all-time record in futility with Jeff Chan, the squad’s most reliable outside gun, missing five.

Petron hasn’t lost a game in more than two months now, and counting an eight-game winning streak to close out eliminations, the Boosters have now won a total of 11 consecutive games for the franchise’s longest.

Fajardo was the epitome of the Petron dominance, scoring almost at will every time he touched the ball as Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao – and his very dependable yet undersized slotman Beau Belga – never found a solution to the 6-foot-9 puzzle.

“He (Fajardo) has been asserting himself in the past few games,” Abanilla said.

This was the slimmest winning margin that Petron had in that 11-game winning streak, and the Boosters almost failed to get there after almost blowing a seven-point lead with 1:48 remaining.

Elijah Millsap and Arwind Santos sealed the Petron win by ganging up on a driving Arizona Reid inside the final 4.2 seconds, as the Rain or Shine import missed what would have been the overtime-forging running jumper at the buzzer.

Reid carried the fight for the Painters, who are now within another loss of being unseated as champions, shooting 39 points that went with 18 rebounds.

Chan was the only other player in twin digits for coach Guiao with 11 as Rain or Shine had to make do with a depleted lineup with Ryan Arana (flu) and big man JR Quinahan (Achilles tendon) sitting it out.

The Boosters take the first of three tries they have to nail a title series slot on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Action takes a break Thursday before the other Final Four pairing pitting Meralco and San Mig Coffee resumes with Game 3 on Friday. That series is tied at 1-1 after the Bolts scored a 73-69 win on Tuesday.

Millsap finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds and Santos chipped in with 16 and seven boards as the Boosters snared a total of 25 offensive rebounds.

Marcio Lassiter was the final player in twin digits for Abanilla with 13.

Petron used only nine men the entire night.
