Rain or Shine tamed the ‘Beast’ and all the others that have made Alaska a tough side to conquer.

The Elasto Painters took the full measure of Calvin Abueva and came from behind to rip the Aces, 101-93, that stopped Alaska’s impressive five-game winning run while claiming solo second in the PBA Philippine Cup eliminations at the Araneta Coliseum.

Rain or Shine held Abueva below twin digits for the first time in his young career and then shut down Alaska’s other big guns in the fourth as the Painters roared to their second straight win and sixth overall in eight games.

Abueva, the second overall pick in the Draft who came into the game undefeated in four games and with averages of 15.3 points and 10.5 rebounds, had just seven and six and was of very little help when the Painters put the game away in the fourth period.

Jeff Chan and JR Quiñahan, meanwhile, hit the shots that mattered most for the Painters, who erased several 10-point deficits and zoomed away for good with several scoring bursts early in the fourth period.

Chan hit 10 straight points in a scorching stretch in the fourth period, with a triple shoving the Painters ahead for good 85-84 with 8:33 left, before he added another lay-up for a three-point lead.

Quiñahan, who finished with 20 points, then knocked in a short jumper as the Painters reaped the fruit of a resilient stand and dropped Alaska to 5-3 overall.

“We know Abueva hasn’t lost a game,” Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao said. “But we didn’t want to get distracted. The ‘Beast’ wasn’t going to beat us (by himself), we had to shut down his support cast like (JV) Casio and Cyrus (Baguio).

“We put a lot of pressure on them defensively and they got tired in the fourth quarter,” added Guiao after Casio and Baguio were effectively taken out of the offensive flow in the fourth period.

Chan finished with 22 points, 12 of them in the fourth with Ryan Arana adding 13 and Larry Rodriguez 12 for the Painters, who have now won five of their last six outings and are clearly the hottest team in the tournament.

“Give Rain or Shine credit, they played great defense in the second half,” Alaska coach Luigi Trillo said. “Granted we miss on offense, but there’s no excuse on (not playing) defense. We chickened out tonight.” Casio was scoreless in the final frame and Baguio had just four. Both, though, still went on to lead the Aces with 16 each.

Talk ‘N Text rebounded from its only loss with a 92-82 ripping of struggling Petron Blaze later in the night.

The defending champion Tropang Texters remained in the lead with the win, which upped their record to 7-1, while dealing the Boosters a second straight loss in a 3-6 record.

Larry Fonacier scored 21 points, all in the final three periods, and three others chipped in with 13 or more as the Texters peeled away from the Boosters in the third quarter.

“It was a much better second half for us. We basically weren’t coming down on defense (in the first half),” Talk ‘N Text coach Norman Black said. “We won because we played much better defense.” Chris Lutz led the Boosters with 18 points with Arwind Santos shooting 17.

Petron used just eight men with several of its mainstays like June Mar Fajardo, Danny Ildefonso and Dorian Pena out because of different injuries.
