In assuming command for the first time in the best-of-seven title series for the PBA Governors’ Cup, San Mig Coffee did what it is best at: shoot the lights out.

The Mixers drained practically every crucial shot they needed to make Sunday night and took a 3-2 lead over Petron Blaze after a 114-103 victory – their second straight in these title playoffs and one which gave them two championship points – at the Araneta Coliseum.

“Tonight, we were a big-shot team,” outspoken San Mig coach Tim Cone said after getting several men to help ward off numerous Petron uprisings in the stretch. “Our next game is going to be a lot harder than this one. I guarantee you that.”

The San Mig victory marked the first time in this series that one team has won two straight games, and the Mixers carved this out in style by getting baskets from some of the unlikeliest finishers.

Yancy De Ocampo and rookie Alex Mallari had their share, before old hands Peter June Simon and former two-time MVP James Yap did a lot of damage when the game was truly on the line.

Simon, the 6-foot-2 former All-Star MVP and Mythical Team member, scored eight points in an 11-0 run that bloated a shaky 97-94 lead to 108-104 heading into the final 4:45.

And after the Boosters crept to within six with a run of eight straight points, Yap rejoined the fray and drained the baskets that put the game to bed – a triple which beat the shotclock and a one-handed jumper from the keyhole with 2:04 left for 113-102.

“Our defense wasn’t that great tonight,” Cone said with a smile. “But we scored 114 and obviously, we hit some shots. They defended us well and we kicked out (passes) and we hit some shots.”

Mark Barroca was the biggest-scoring local for Cone, and De Ocampo finished with his highest total in the series with 10, highlighted by three straight jumpers off fellow 6-foot-9 center June Mar Fajardo which gave the Mixers that 97-94 lead.

Barroca came off the bench to shoot 22 points, equal his career-high, and dish out 10 assists – his new career mark – as he outplayed the entire Petron point guard rotation of the returning Alex Cabagnot, Chico Lanete and Paolo Hubalde.

The trio combined for only 10 points and seven assists.

Barroca, just 5-foot-10, also defended the 6-foot-5 Elijah Millsap with great effect.

“Mark’s defense on Millsap is out of this world. You have to give Little Mark a lot of credit,” Cone said of his surprise package in the series.

Game 6 is scheduled Wednesday night also at the Big Dome in Cubao, and obviously, Petron’s Gee Abanilla doesn’t like his chances going into the last two games of the series – if there would be a second game.

The last time that a team lost a 3-2 lead in a title series this long was in 2009, when Jong Uichico, the coaching Barangay Ginebra, bowed to Talk ‘N Text in the Commissioner’s Cup Finals.

“San Mig just played really good basketball tonight. They shot the ball really well,” said coach Gee Abanilla. “I think they really played good defense against us. We are down, but certainly we are not out.

“We will use the next two days to come up with a better game plan.”

Millsap paced the Boosters with 37 points and Fajardo scattered 23. But both were out of the equation when the Mixers broke away.
