MARSEILLE: Gilles Simon won the Marseille Open title for the second time on Sunday by beating fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils in three sets in the final.

Fifth seed Simon, who previously won the title in 2007, beat seventh seed Monfils 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a final that lasted two-and-a-half hours.

It was a 12th career title for the 30-year-old, who recently reached the semifinals in Rotterdam.

Nadal stunned by Fognini in Rio semifinal

Fabio Fognini pulled off a huge upset, stunning top seed and holder Rafa Nadal 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the Rio Open semifinal on Saturday.

The Italian’s spectacular victory ended world number three Nadal’s 52-match winning streak in semifinals on clay and earned him a place in the final against another Spaniard David Ferrer.

“I’m really happy about this match. I beat the best player on this surface,” said the world number 28, who has been in good form this year since winning the Australian Open doubles title with Simone Bolelli last month.

“Rafa is always difficult. From the second set I played really well, and I tried to change a little bit to be more positive on court,” he was quoted as saying on the ATP Tour website (www.atptour.com).

Nadal had complained of poor scheduling after Friday’s quarter-final win over Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas finished at 3.30 a.m. on Saturday.

Fognini played a long last eight match that lasted more than three hours on Friday before he overcame Argentine Federico Delbonis.

“I’m super happy, and obviously tomorrow I will have to battle David, who has always beaten me ... I will obviously be happy if I win. If I lose, I will also leave with the good memories from this week in Rio,” Fognini said after his win that took two hours and 17 minutes.

Second seed Ferrer reached the final with a 7-5 6-1 win over Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer.

Karlovic to face Young in Delray Beach final

Fourth seeded Croatian Ivo Karlovic pounded 17 aces, overpowering fifth-seeded Adrian Mannarino on Saturday to reach the ATP Delray Beach Open final.

Karlovic, ranked 29th in the world, saved all five break points he faced in the 70-minute match. He’ll face American Donald Young, a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 winner over Australian Bernard Tomic.

Karlovic, 35, will be playing in his 13th ATP tour final. He last captured a trophy at Bogota in July of 2013.

Young, 25, withstood 13 aces from Australia’s Tomic and saved seven of 10 break points he faced.

Young also beat Tomic in a three-setter in Memphis last week.

The 25-year-old US southpaw, ranked 56th in the world, overcame eight double faults in the windy weather and sealed the win with a service break.

“My goal was to be more aggressive, move forward, not give (Tomic) too much time to start planning his attack because once he gets you on a string of the way he wants you to play it’s tough to get off of it,” Young said.

On Sunday, the American will be playing his second tour-level final. In his only other championship match he lost to Andy Murray in Bangkok in 2011.

“I lost pretty badly,” Young recalled of that final, adding that he didn’t think it would take another four years to get another title shot.
