GLENDALE, Ariz.: Coyotes goalie Mike Smith scored a goal from his own crease with just over a second left to punctuate Phoenix's 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night.

Smith was already having a good night before sending a wrist shot the length of the ice into the vacated Red Wings net. Smith made 31 saves before scoring his first NHL goal.

Mike Ribeiro scored twice in the third to extend his point streak to six games and help the Coyotes storm back from an early 2-0 deficit. Martin Hanzal's goal at 7:08 of the third, in his 400th NHL game, put Phoenix ahead 3-2. That came 2:01 after Ribeiro had tied it.

His third of the season with 6:46 remaining gave Phoenix a 4-2 lead before Smith capped the win in dramatic fashion.

Antoine Vermette started the comeback in the second after Pavel Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi gave the Red Wings the lead in the first.

Penguins 4 Canucks 3, SO: In Pittsburgh, Evgeni Malkin scored in the third round of the shootout, Marc-Andre Fleury made the deciding stop on Ryan Kesler, and the Pittsburgh Penguins remained unbeaten at home with a 4-3 victory against the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.

Sidney Crosby moved into a tie atop the NHL leaderboard with his seventh goal of the season, and had two assists. Chris Kunitz netted his fourth goal and added two assists, and rookie defenceman Olli Maatta scored his first NHL goal for the Penguins, who won for the 20th time in 22 home games.

Crosby extended his point streak to eight games, his longest stretch to start a season. Crosby, who leads the NHL with 17 points, has recorded multiple points in four consecutive games.

Fleury stopped 36 shots for his seventh win. Roberto Luongo, who made 25 saves, turned aside Crosby and Jussi Jokinen in the shootout before Malkin scored.

Oilers 3 Senators 1: In Ottawa, Ryan-Nugent Hopkins scored two goals, including one into an empty net, to help Edmonton beat Ottawa and snap a five-game losing streak.

Jordan Eberle added a goal, and Devan Dubnyk made 35 saves for the Oilers (2-6-1).

Chris Neil had the only goal for the Senators (3-3-2), and Robin Lehner made 18 saves in his second start of the season.

An extended power play early in the third period failed to provide the Oilers with any insurance. Ottawa failed to capitalize on momentum created by killing off a 5-on-3 power play that lasted a full 2 minutes.

Devils 4 Rangers 0: In Newark, N.J., Cory Schneider made 22 saves for his first shutout with New Jersey, and the Devils became the last NHL team to win a game this season by beating the New York Rangers.

Andrei Loktionov, Adam Henrique, Michael Ryder and Dainius Zubrus scored for the Devils (1-4-3), who ended their worst start to a season with a laugher against the injury-depleted Rangers. New York (2-5) has only two wins on its season-opening, nine-game road trip.

Jaromir Jagr and Marek Zidlicky added two assists apiece. The shutout was the 10th of Schneider's NHL career.

Hurricanes 4 Islanders 3: In Uniondale, N.Y., Jiri Tlusty scored his first two goals of the season, and Cam Ward made 22 saves as Carolina held on for a win over the New York Islanders.

Tlusty netted his first goal 1:05 into the second, jamming a loose puck past Evgeni Nabokov. Jordan Staal added his first with a wrist shot from the left circle at 6:36, and Jeff Skinner made it 3-0 at 13:37 with his third. He leads the Hurricanes (4-2-3) with nine points.

Matt Moulson broke through for the Islanders with his third of the season on the power play with 1:07 left in the second. John Tavares assisted, giving him a seven-game point streak. The Islanders captain has four goals and six assists during the streak.

Tlusty scored his second of the game 11:06 into the third.

New York's Frans Nielsen scored his fourth on a power play at 13:19 of the third before Kyle Okposo made it 4-3 with 1:01 left.

The Islanders (3-3-2) sustained their first regulation loss in five home games. New York had posted two wins and two shootout losses at Nassau Coliseum.

The Hurricanes are 21-5-5 in their last 31 games against New York and 10-1-2 in their past 13 visits to Long Island.
